Log 1 - Moving & Predeparture Preparations

Where does all this junk come from? Late May 2002
Sheila works on packing up the house in Calgary. Still smiling!
U-hauling out of here... Tuesday, May 28, 2002
Moving out date has arrived. No matter how much you prepare, why does it still take so much work? We are heading north to Sheila's brother Wayne's house to store the items we want to keep.
En route to the west coast Monday, June 3, 2002
After cramming our earthly possessions into a crawl space 10' x 15' by 30", we still needed a 2nd U-haul to get our remaining items out to the west coast, where we keep our sailboat.
After years of planning and lots of work, we made it! Tuesday, June 4th, 2002
After an all-night drive from Alberta to Vancouver Island we arrive at Tioga.
So, where does it all go?? The unpacking begins. Yikes, was all this stuff absolutely necessary?
Working on steering system June & July 2002
A tremendous amount of working is involved in getting a sailboat and your affairs ready for cruising and off-shore passage making. Here Chris is crammed in a tight spot working on a wind-activated automatic steering system (a windvane).
Gulf Islands sunset July 2002
In between all the preparations, we still managed to get a weekend off here and there. This is a beautiful Gulf Islands' sunset.

John G. with backup insulin pump.

Wednesday July 3rd, 2002
We had a number of visitors over the summer, including John G. from Auto Control Medical and his family, who dropped by to deliver a back-up insulin pump for Gerrit and peace-of-mind for our family.
Tioga, ready to go August 2002

Pretty much ready to go. We are exhausted. We are told you if you wait until your boat is completely ready to go, you'll never go anywhere. Next, up to Barkley Sound on the west side of Vancouver Island, from where we will depart for San Francisco on August 24th or so.
